Do Not Take Drugs and Alcohol, God's Temple is Your Body!

Penny went to a party on Friday night with a whole load of her mates. After a while, some of the group got bored and decided to go to the corner shop to see if they would get served if they tried to buy a bottle vodka.

A little bit later, they came back with two bottles which were quickly opened and passed around.

Penny didn't really feel comfortable about this and at the first managed to ignore the bottle and carry on her conservation.

However, after a while , some of the group started teasing her about not drinking and she gave in and had a large swig. While not really liking the taste, she felt pressured and carried on drinking throughout the evening. She ended up feeling really dizzy and was sick in the toilet.

The next morning she felt rather ill and embarrassed.

It is easy to come into contact with illegal substances. A survey of over 9,000 English school pupils aged eleven to fifteen found that:

  • 11 percent had taken drugs in the last month
  • 19 percent had taken drugs in last year
  • 9 percent were regular smokers (10 percent of girls, compared of boys)
  • 22 percent had drunk alcohol in the last week.

How do Penny's actions and statistics of the school pupils compare with people you know of that age?

Read 1 Corinthians 6:12-20. Paul warns of the dangers of becoming focused or addicted to worldly things. In our culture these might include food, sex, computer gaming, drugs and alcohol.

Bible Texts
1 Corinthians 6:12-20
12ESV:Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions.
13ESV:Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.
14ESV:For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
15ESV:What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!
16ESV:Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?
17ESV:But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed,
18ESV:and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.
19ESV:I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.
20ESV:For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.

Questions to Consider
  • What should you listen to what the Bible says about these temptations?
  • What are the things that you do that damage your “temple for the Holy Spirit” (verse 19)?

Motion Points
  • Thinking about everything linked to parties you go to. Write them down on a piece of paper under three columns: things which are not wrong in themselves but open to abuse; things which God will forbid.
  • Developing an accountability group with a couple of your mates where you check up on each other, including how you act on a party night.
Hymn for Today
O For Thousand Tongues to Sing [ Charles Wesley]

O for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer's praise,
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of His grace!

My gracious Master and my God,
Assist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad
The honors of Thy name.

Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
That bids our sorrows cease;
'Tis music in the sinner's ears,
'Tis life, and health, and peace.

He breaks the power of canceled sin,
He sets the prisoner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean,
His blood availed for me.

He speaks, and, listening to His voice,
New life the dead receive,
The mournful, broken hearts rejoice,
The humble poor believe.

Hear Him, ye deaf; His praise, ye dumb,
Your loosened tongues employ;
Ye blind, behold your Savior come,
And leap, ye lame, for joy.

In Christ your Head, you then shall know,
Shall feel your sins forgiven;
Anticipate your heaven below,
And own that love is heaven.

Glory to God, and praise and love
Be ever, ever given,
By saints below and saints above,
The church in earth and heaven.

On this glad day the glorious Sun
Of Righteousness arose;
On my benighted soul He shone
And filled it with repose.

Sudden expired the legal strife,
'Twas then I ceased to grieve;
My second, real, living life
I then began to live.

Then with my heart I first believed,
Believed with faith divine,
Power with the Holy Ghost received
To call the Savior mine.

I felt my Lord's atoning blood
Close to my soul applied;
Me, me He loved, the Son of God,
For me, for me He died!

I found and owned His promise true,
Ascertained of my part,
My pardon passed in heaven I knew
When written on my heart.

Look unto Him, ye nations, own
Your God, ye fallen race;
Look, and be saved through faith alone,
Be justified by grace.

See all your sins on Jesus laid:
The Lamb of God was slain,
His soul was once an offering made
For every soul of man.

Awake from guilty nature's sleep,
And Christ shall give you light,
Cast all your sins into the deep,
And wash the ?thiop white.

Harlots and publicans and thieves
In holy triumph join!
Saved is the sinner that believes
From crimes as great as mine.

Murderers and all ye hellish crew
In holy triumph join!
Believe the Savior died for you;
For me the Savior died.

With me, your chief, ye then shall know,
Shall feel your sins forgive
Anticipate your heaven below,
And own that love is heaven.
