Old Before I Die

“I hope I'm old before I die.” So sang Robbie Williams in an effort to get away from old rebel teenage thought of denying before you got old.

In Isaiah 38:1-9 Hezekiah King of Judah had been having a bad time, he'd been really sick and thought he was about to die . But the had other ideas and sent Isaiah to Hezekiah to “make other plans” because God  going to heal him! The king was so overjoyed, that once he was well again, he wrote a song!

There are always times when you feel that life is not worth living. Robbie, who went to numerous detox centres, must have felt the same way. But when threatened with death , we cling on and on because we don't want to lose our life.

Hezekiah sang about people loved, his home, and the fact that he was only in the middle of his life -this was no time to die!

For Robbie, death was a serious threat and to the King of Judah it was a forgone conclusion, but they both recovered. And they both wanted to sing about it! Read Hezekiah's lyrics in Isaiah 38:9-20.

Study Text [ Isaiah 38:9-20]
9KJV:The writing of Hezekiah king of Judah, when he had been sick, and was recovered of his sickness:
10KJV:I said in the cutting off of my days, I shall go to the gates of the grave: I am deprived of the residue of my years.
11KJV:I said, I shall not see the Lord, even the Lord, in the land of the living: I shall behold man no more with the inhabitants of the world.
12KJV:Mine age is departed, and is removed from me as a shepherd's tent: I have cut off like a weaver my life: he will cut me off with pining sickness: from day even to night wilt thou make an end of me.
13KJV:I reckoned till morning, that, as a lion, so will he break all my bones: from day even to night wilt thou make an end of me.
14KJV:Like a crane or a swallow, so did I chatter: I did mourn as a dove: mine eyes fail with looking upward: O Lord, I am oppressed; undertake for me.
15KJV:What shall I say? he hath both spoken unto me, and himself hath done it: I shall go softly all my years in the bitterness of my soul.
16KJV:O Lord, by these things men live, and in all these things is the life of my spirit: so wilt thou recover me, and make me to live.
17KJV:Behold, for peace I had great bitterness: but thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.
18KJV:For the grave cannot praise thee, death can not celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth.
19KJV:The living, the living, he shall praise thee, as I do this day: the father to the children shall make known thy truth.
20KJV:The Lord was ready to save me: therefore we will sing my songs to the stringed instruments all the days of our life in the house of the Lord.

Questions to Consider
  • What did Hezekiah suggest we do about life, in Isaiah 38:19
  • What different ways can you think of celebrated life?

Motion Points
  • Visiting and giving some encouragement to someone who has a serious illness that may be making them depressed.
  • Giving some financial help to an organization helping the desperate, such as the Samaritans.

Fact for Today
Isaiah's vocal challenges to the different kings of Judah didn't make him popular ( See Isaiah 39:1-8, for example). According to tradition, the evil king of Manasseh had Isaiah killed by tying him between two planks of wood and sawing him in half.

Hymn for Today  [ Amen 1 ]
Amen, Oh Lawdy !
Amen. Have mercy
Amen, Amen, Amen
Sing it over now

Amen, Oh Lawdy !
Amen. Have mercy
Amen, Amen, Amen

See the little baby
Lying in a manger
On Christmas morning
Amen, Amen, Amen

See Him in a temple
Talking to the elders
How are they marvelled
Amen, Amen, Amen

See Him at the seashore
Preaching to the people
Healing all the sick ones
Amen, Amen, Amen

See Him at the garden
Praying to the father
In deepest sorrow
Amen, Amen, Amen

See Him on the cross
Bearing all my sins
In bitter agony
Amen, Amen, Amen

Yes, He died to save us
And He rose in Easter
Now He lives for ever
Amen, Amen, Amen

Hallelujah!
Jesus is my Saviour
For He lives forever
Amen, Amen, Amen
