A Tale of Two Teenagers

Ted and Ed were in their final year at school. One was voted most popular; the other most respected. Both passed their exams with excellent grades.

Ed never talked about himself. He never seemed to mind not being in the  spotlight. But Ted had to be the centre of attention. If he thought that others had missed the significance of his accomplishments, he quickly filled them in.

They were two of the the  country's best cross-country runners. Ted almost always finished first, and Ed almost always came in just behind him. They were both comfortable with that and always managed to congratulate and praise each other after a race. In their final race meeting, however , Ed finished first. Ted couldn't congratulate or praise him, or even accept congratulations for himself. He was only comfortable with being Number one.

Ted boasted a lot to get attention, but Ed didn't. Read Luke 1:39-56 to see how God blessed a young girl, who didn't boast or take credit for herself.

Bible Text
Luke 1:39-56

39KJV:And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;
40KJV:And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
41KJV:And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
42KJV:And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
43KJV:And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44KJV:For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
45KJV:And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
46KJV:And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
47KJV:And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
48KJV:For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
49KJV:For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
50KJV:And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
51KJV:He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
52KJV:He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
53KJV:He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
54KJV:He hath helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
55KJV:As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.
56KJV:And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.

Question to Consider
  • If Mary were around today, what do you think she would be like?
  • Are you more like Ed or Ted?  How does Mary's prayer apply to you?

Motion Points
  • Drawing a line with two endpoints labelled ED and TED. Place a pencil point where you think you fit on the line, and another where you would like to be on the line. Ask God to help you reach your goal.

  • Thinking of someone you know who is like Ed, and spending more time with that person.

Hymn for Today
Lift Up The Trumpet [ Jessie E. Strout ]

Lift up the trumpet, and loud let it ring:
Jesus is coming again!
Cheer up, ye pilgrims, be joyful and sing:
Jesus is coming again!

Refrain:
Coming again, coming again,
Jesus is coming again!

Echo it, hilltops; proclaim it, ye plains:
Jesus is coming again!
Coming in glory, the Lamb that was slain;
Jesus is coming again!

Heavings of earth, tell the vast, wondering throng:
Jesus is coming again!
Tempests and whirlwinds, the anthem prolong;
Jesus is coming again!

Nations are angry by this we do know
Jesus is coming again!
Knowledge increases; men run to and fro;
Jesus is coming again!
Amazing Fact
When Mary wrapped Jesus with cloths ( Luke 2:7), he probably couldn't move his arms because he was wrapped so tightly. In biblical times, people believed a good six-month”wrapping” prevented arms and legs from becoming crooked.
