AN INCH IS AS GOOD AS A MILE

Daniel used to write a column for his school newspaper. It wasn't a big column, but it was fun. He wrote humorously about school food, class workload, or latest bungle of the notoriously bad football team. He had been given the job because his best friend Sam, was the editor . And much to their surprise, the column has become one of the most popular features, even among the kids who attended other schools.

One Monday on the way to class, Daniel saw a student in a wheelchair and an older woman trying -unsucessfully -to push the wheelchair over the kerb.

When Daniel stopped to help, he noticed a wheelchair ramp cut into the kerb just few yards away. But the yellow paint that marked it off had faded, and someone had parked in front of it.

“Unbelievable,” Daniel said, shaking his head.

“Believe it,” said the student in the wheelchair, whose name was Bruce . “It happens all the time. That's all why my mum has to come with me. More than half the ramps haven't been painted for for five years. People just ignore them.”

Daniel smelled a story. He agreed to meet Bruce and his mum the next day. They would bring their extra wheelchair, and Daniel would spend the day trying to get around school in it.

That's how Daniel discovered that the main lift stopped two inches below the floor level (as good as two miles when you're in a wheelchair) . He had trouble negotiating the super narrow doors in all over the school and that was just in six hours.

The next day, Daniel wrote about his experiences ,but somehow that just didn't seem enough. He also attended student council meetings and talked to the headmaster about it .

A few months , later Daniel talked to Bruce agaib. But this time his mum wasn't with him. “She doesn't need to come with any more,” he said . “For some reason , the head just seemed to wake up.”

“Perhaps somebody tapped him on the shoulder ,” Daniel said.

Romans 13:1-10 encourages us to do what’s right in serving our government. In Paul's day, that meant carefully following the laws laid out by Rome. But in today's democracy, it can mean helping to shape policy -just as Daniel. Read the scripture below to see what else Paul said about your relationship with the government;

1NIV:Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.
2NIV:Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.
3NIV:For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended.
4NIV:For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.
5NIV:Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.
6NIV:This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing.
7NIV:Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.
8NIV:Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.
9NIV:The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
10NIV:Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
