Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos says he was surprised to find out Cristiano Ronaldo would not be showing up for the UEFA awards ceremony on Thursday.

The Portuguese star was not present as individual prizes were handed out for last season because he was overlooked for Player of the Year, which went to former Madrid team-mate Luka Modric.

Ronaldo was not completely overlooked, as last season's Champions League top scorer was named the competition's Forward of the Season in a clean sweep for Madrid, who also saw Keylor Navas acknowledged for his displays in goal with Ramos named the best defender.

Still, Ronaldo is apparently unhappy with second place when it came to the big prize, while his agent, Jorge Mendes, said not giving it to him was a "shameful" call from the 60 coaches and 55 journalists who voted. "We found out practically when the microphones were being set up and we were surprised," Ramos said. "But he does what he wants."

Cristiano Ronaldo's agent has slammed UEFA for not giving the Juventus star the Player of the Year award. Ronaldo did not show up at the Champions League group stage draw ceremony, where the awards for last season were handed out.

After winning a third consecutive Champions League crown with Real Madrid last season and finishing as the competition's top scorer, Ronaldo was named the best forward last season and was named among the final three for the big prize.

Modric collected 313 points, 90 more than Ronaldo, who finished ahead of Mohamed Salah in the chart. But Jorge Mendes expected more for his client, as he feels the 33-year-old's status as the best around cannot be disputed.

“Football is played on the field and that’s where Cristiano won," he told Record. " He scored 15 goals, carried Real Madrid on his back and conquered the Champions League again. “It’s ridiculous, shameful. The winner is not in doubt, as Ronaldo is the best in his position.”

Sergio Ramos played up his role as the pantomime villain during an awkward reunion with Mohamed Salah at the Champions League group stage draw.

The Real Madrid captain was seated behind Salah at the event in Monaco as the Liverpool star was given a painful reminder of the shoulder injury he sustained in May's final.

Ramos was at the centre of the controversial incident, with his actions in bringing down the forward recently described as "ruthless and brutal" by Jurgen Klopp.

And the 32-year-old appeared to poke fun at the furore on Thursday by gently placing his hand on the same left shoulder on his way back from collecting the competition's Defender of the Season award. Egypt international Salah later lost out to Cristiano Ronaldo for the Forward of the Season award.

Liverpool and Chelsea will have a difficult start to their respective Carabao Cup campaigns after being drawn against each other in the third round, while Frank Lampard will come up against his former coach Jose Mourinho.

Chelsea made it to last season's semi-finals before being eliminated 2-1 on aggregate by Arsenal, who themselves were defeated by Manchester City in the final.

The two sides last met each other in the Carabao Cup in January 2015 – Chelsea emerging 2-1 aggregate victors on their way to lifting the trophy.
The full draw is as follows;
Arsenal v Brentford
Oxford United v Man City
Liverpool v Chelsea
Everton v Southampton
Man Utd v Derby
Tottenham v Watford
West Ham v Macclesfield
Wolves v Leicester
Bournemouth v Blackburn
Millwall v Fulham
West Brom v Crystal Palace

Chile left out star forward Alexis Sanchez for their upcoming international friendlies at the recommendation of Premier League giants Manchester United.

Reinaldo Rueda included Barcelona recruit Arturo Vidal for the trip to the Far East, where Chile will face Japan and South Korea on September 6 and 10 respectively.

However, Chile's all-time leading goalscorer and most-capped player Sanchez was not on the list, having struggled for form and fitness at United.

The forward has yet to score or tally an assist in his two games this season, and his club suggested it would be best if he sits out these upcoming international matches.

"It's a recommendation from Manchester United's medical staff," Chile head coach Rueda said.

"He is recovering but all that this trip means the suggestion was that he should not participate in these friendlies.

"Respecting that and what Alexis feels we did not take into account for this call."

Barcelona are on the verge of an agreement with Real Betis over a loan move for Rafinha, as per reports.

The two sides have been in talks over a deal for some time as Barca wanted to include an obligation for Betis to buy at the end of the season.

The Seville side would rather have the option to send him back, however, and are set to get their way after a meeting on Thursday.

Before he goes, Rafinha will likely extend his contract at Barca to 2021 as the Catalan side look to avoid losing him for a cut price.

The 25-year-old had been linked to a move to Inter, where he spent the second half of last season on loan after overcoming a serious knee injury, but the Italian side had to back out of the deal.

West Brom midfielder Nacer Chadli has joined Monaco in a deal worth a reported £10 million (€11m/$13m). Injuries limited Chadli to just six total appearances last season, as the Baggies were relegated to the Championship.

Despite his abbreviated campaign the 29-year-old helped Belgium to a third-place finish at the World Cup this summer, scoring in the last 16 against Japan and starting in both the quarter-final and the semi-final.

"I am very happy to join AS Monaco, a great French club that participates in the Champions League," Chadli told Monaco's official website. "The results of the last seasons prove the quality of the project and the ambition of the club. "I will do everything to help AS Monaco achieve great things and achieve its goals."

The world's fastest man has graced the football pitch in a professional capacity for the first time as Usain Bolt made his debut for A-League side Central Coast Mariners.

On trial with the Australian club, Bolt came on in the 72nd minute of a friendly match against a Central Coast select side with the Mariners already leading 6-0.

While there were a few heavy touches from the Jamaican, he was getting himself into some dangerous positions - twice denied headers from close range and was only inches away from a tap-in after 90 minutes.

It wasn't all smooth sailing for Bolt however, who was forced to take off a golden necklace a few minutes after coming on and was sweating profusely as the full-time whistle went.

There's clearly still plenty of work to do for the 32-year-old if he is to earn an A-League contract, but time is on his side, with the Mariners vowing to give him as long as 12 months to get him up to speed.

Arsenal will face Portuguese giants Sporting in the group stage of the 2018-19 Europa League, with Premier League rivals Chelsea taking on PAOK.

The Gunners are joined by Qarabag and Vorskla in Group E, with Maurizio Sarri's troops welcoming Belarusian title holders BATE and Hungarian side Vidi to Group L.

Elsewhere, Scottish champions Celtic have been paired with Salzburg, with Red Bull partners Leipzig and Norwegian outfit Rosenborg - a side the Hoops have already beaten in Champions League qualifying this season - joining them in Group B. Steven Gerrard and his Rangers side face Villarreal, Rapid Vienna and Spartak Moscow in Group G and AC Milan tackle Olympiakos, Real Betis and Dudelange in Group F.

Last season's beaten finalists Marseille face tough tests against Lazio, Eintracht Frankfurt and Apollon in Group H. Zenit are a side with plenty of elite experience in Europe and will face Bordeaux as part of their Group C campaign, Anderlecht must try to overcome Fenerbahce and Dinamo Zagreb in Group D, while Sevilla have been place in Group J with Krasnodar and Standard Liege.

Bayer Leverkusen will see Ludogorets as their biggest challengers in Group A, with Besiktas facing some big fixtures against Genk and Malmo in Group I.

Gianni Infantino, President of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), has expressed appreciation to the Super Eagles, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Nigerian fans for their “unforgettable” role in the 2018 world cup tournament. Infantino expressed his appreciation in a letter addressed to Amaju Pinnick, NFF President, on Thursday, where he stated that he was happy to have watched the Super Eagles play against Croatia and Iceland.

The letter read: “I would like to express our most sincere appreciation to your national team for participating in this 21st edition of the FIFA World Cup. “The 2018 FIFA World Cup was an unforgettable celebration of football and a major factor in this was the participation of the Super Eagles, their sixth FIFA World Cup appearance.

“I personally was very happy and proud to be able to attend in your presence two of your National Team matches, against Croatia and Iceland. Please pass on my compliments to all those who have contributed to this campaign, the players, the head coach, Gernot Rohr, but also the technical and medical team and, of course, the fans. Such achievement is no doubt based on hard work, professionalism and attention to detail, as well as passion and love of the game. All this augurs well for a very promising future and will undoubtedly pave the way for future success.”

First of all. There’s a myth going around that says love is uncontrollable. "I just fell in love" - like it was a ditch or something. You don’t fall in love anymore than you fall out of love. Love is a choice. You choose to love. You choose not to love.

In fact, loving someone when you don’t feel like it is a greater expression of love than loving someone when you do feel like it. Love is getting up in the middle of the night and helping a sick child when that’s the last thing you want to do. Love is being patient with your spouse when they’re irritable. Love is when you do the loving thing even when you don’t feel like it.

When you love in spite of your feelings, that’s what I call loving by faith. And don’t forget, it’s easier to act your way into a feeling than feel your way into an action. If you act in a loving way, eventually the feelings will come back.

What about you? Have you been deceived by the myth that love is uncontrollable? Have you stopped loving someone because "the feelings just aren’t there anymore"? Maybe it’s a former friend, a neighbor, a co-worker, a relative, or your own spouse. Remember, love is a choice. And maybe you need to make that choice right now.

The main purpose of marriage is to create a stable home for children to grow and thrive; it protects you from intimate immorality; for procreation. It is a beautiful picture of the relationship of Christ and His church. It is part of God's ordained plan to provide the world with a picture of His love for men and women. It becomes the means for married couples to demonstrate their love for God. You shouldn't marry just to get something.

You must discover yourself and learn to love yourself before you marry. You must be content. Once you accommodate yourself, you then can give love to a man. The Proverbs 31 woman is sure of herself; is content and helps her husband to grow spiritually in God. You may blame your man for not taking good care of you, but you should also take a good look at yourself. You must take good care of yourself and make yourself appealing to your husband
1 Kings 19:1-2;1. And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword. 2. Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah saying, So let the gods do to me and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow at this time."
When you have a problem, you can't go around, under, or over it. You will go through it, but know that God will work it out. Pray about it. There is power in a praying woman. Don't compare yourself to other women. Those who compare themselves to others can be resentful, envious, jealous and full of bitterness.
Galatians 6:4-5; 4. But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. 5. For every man shall bear his own burden." Every man should take care of his own responsibilities and endure his own trials and not put them on someone else.
2 Corinthians 10:12; "For we dare not make ourselves of the number or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves are not wise."
Don't compare yourselves to others. God has given all of us a certain measure and you should use that measure to praise God. Remember that God should be the center of every relationship. Be excited about where you are now. You are still alive and breathing; you have your children; you have a roof over your head and so many blessings from God. Be thankful. God will do more if you are appreciative.

When you are married, stay loyal in your marriage and stay away from the temptations of the world. A wife should love and take care of her husband and herself. Be a wife to him and take care of the home. Love him and pray for and with him. A wife is subject to her husband. A husband must love his wife as Christ loves the church. A man and woman should love their spouse as their own bodies.
(Ephesians 5:22-25, 28-33). A man must love and cherish his wife and the marriage bed should be undefiled. (Hebrews 13:4). Don't have intimate relations outside of marriage. Live your life with your spouse in a way that glorifies God. Always put Christ first in everything.
The major problem is when your is discussion you with others . Some spouses complain bitterly about their partners broadcasting their issues to outsiders; especially complaining about them to strangers without consulting them. The suspicious looks they get from people when they step out, is a turn off for their relationship. Some go to the extent of fighting the outsiders; others just leave the relationship.
This is not happening because of the absence of love; rather the distance between the two hearts has grown wider. One partner is getting hurt because he or she can't express what the other is putting them through. They wished this wasn’t happening but the lack of friendship has created a barrier between two hearts.

They also end up hurting the other spouse with their actions. To them, you are supposed to be my defense, my best friend, my confidant, someone who covers my back, someone who doesn't make me feel vulnerable; you are to protect me from outsiders and not to go telling the outsider what you are not happy with, about me. To me, in your claim to seek help, sympathy, audience and release stress, you have painted me black. Don't expect your relationship to work if you will go out and talk to everyone else about the problem, but never talk to each other about it.

The solution to this problem is to make your spouse your best friend, look at things from their views, express your hurt to them instead of accusing or putting blames on them. Give them time to get over issues and always forgive them for their actions.
Focus on their strengths; anytime they do things you are happy with, praise them and also use the opportunity to tell them nicely what you didn’t like. If talking to your partner one-on-one is becoming a problem to you, write them a letter. Start with the things you like about them, tell them what you don't like and also add what you want to see. Don't be selfish in the relationship; put your partner's happiness first, look for ways and means to make the relationship work rather looking for people to sell your partner to.

Spouses should gate their relationship from intruders and gossips, and also maintain a high level of respect for each other especially when things don't go well in their union. One of the worst feelings for a spouse is to find out that, he or she has been discussed by the one who claimed to love them with an outsider; it feels like they never meant to them as much as they thought, it makes them feel stupid for being in a relationship with them. I have discovered that love doesn't guarantee the success of a relationship. Love cannot help you stick to one person all year round, and on the other hand, cheating isn't always a product of not loving your partner.

In fact, loving someone doesn't guarantee not falling in love with someone else. Relationships work out mostly because of our heads not our hearts. It works out because of our emotional maturity, empathetic intelligence and self discipline; because, time will come when you'll see more beautiful, handsome, romantic, intelligent, sexy, rich, curvy and God fearing people than the one you're in a relationship with.

In those times, love will not help you. Self control will help you. Emotional intelligence will come to your rescue and commitment will keep you going. With those characteristics, no matter how you feel for someone else, the person you're committed to will rank first in your life.

You think happily married people don't see better people than the ones they married to? You think they don't feel funny sometimes? You think they don't catch feelings? They do! But understanding that commitment is greater than feelings and it  is the great arsenal that destroys those unhelpful impulses.

You can fall in love with anyone, but building a relationship takes absolutely more than what attracted you to them and takes more than love. We are too fond of loving when it's convenient and sweet. We are too fond of loving when love is there; but that can only last for just the first 3 - 6 months of the relationship in many cases.

After then, you'll realise that the feelings have dropped and it's now your responsibility to make the relationship work, not love's responsibility. Relationships cannot be readymade. You have to build it and it's never always about love, it requires commitment and intelligence. In the long run in marriages, it's not just love that keeps them together forever, it's determination and commitment.

Everyone falls in love; it takes little or no effort to do that. But staying in love? Building a relationship? Only the strong and committed ones do that. That's why we must find that one person and commit to that one, discipline yourself and bridle your emotions.Building a relationship is hard work, it's like building a career, It's like pursuing a dream.

It's  always tough. At some point it will be so bitter but you can make it work by putting your heads together. You can scale through the trying times by staying focused and committed. The kind of love that attracts two people together is not the kind of love that will keep them together. Be emotionally strong, be self disciplined and above all,  have the God factor that will give you the grace needed to reign you in.
There must be a teachable spirit is a quality both partners need to build a healthy relationship. Some men may think that a teachable spirit should be a quality for only women because they are meant to submit to the men but the truth is that as a man if you are not teachable then you have a big problem called pride. We know that men naturally have ego but that shouldn't be an excuse. As a man you must also have a teachable spirit no matter your level of ego.

So what does it mean to be teachable? To be teachable means your willingness to learn, your willingness to accept that you are wrong and your willingness to listen to corrections when you are corrected.

No relationship is perfect and there are times that you as a person will do something wrong but when your partner tries to correct you, how do you react?. Are you open to the corrections or you just feel like your partner has no right to tell you what you did is wrong.

Note that teachability is not a sign of foolishness or inferiority neither is it a sign of weakness. It only displays your level of humility and meekness. Humility is a sign that you are teachable and pride is a sign that you are not teachable. It's as simple as that.

Pride makes you a god to yourself, your life will revolve around only yourself. Pride will make you to be too arrogant to be instructed or corrected. Pride will make you feel like nobody has reached the standard to point your attention to your wrongs not even your partner. The simple truth is that pride can destroy you and it can also wreck your relationship.

If you have a problem with learning from the good advice your partner gives you then you need to check yourself. If you find it difficult to listen to the corrections your partner gives when you do something wrong then you need to check yourself. If you are always justifying your wrongs even when you know fully well that what you did is not right then you need to check yourself.

If you shun your partner when he or she is telling you the things you did wrong then you need to check yourself. These are real signs that you lack a teachable spirit so you need to work on yourself. Can a teachable spirit be cultivated? Yes it can.

All you need to do is to be willing to learn from your partner, be willing to always accept that you are wrong and apologise and be open to corrections as well.

Always remember that a healthy relationship is built when both partners are always open to learning and corrections from each other. Cultivate a teachable spirit because it will go a long way in sustaining your relationship.

Ekiti State Governor-Elect, Kayode Fayemi, has filed his defence to the petition by the candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and outgoing Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Professor Kolapo Olusola Eleka.

Fayemi in a 2,558-page defence with over 3,000 documents as exhibits, averred that he won the gubernatorial election of July 14, 2018 and urged the tribunal to dismiss the petition of Professor Eleka.

The statement added that the team of lawyers with 3,500 exhibits and 1,009 witnesses were on Tuesday led to the tribunal by three Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Hakeem AfoIabi, Yomi Aliyu and Kayode Olatoke.

Olatoke after filing the petition on Tuesday told journalists that Eleka's petition was a waste of time claiming that it lacked substance and was sure that the case would be dismissed by the tribunal.

"The third ground is on deliberate voiding of votes as alleged by Eleka but in actual fact, majority of the voided ballots were votes meant for Fayemi, while the fourth ground is on vote buying which is baseless as it was, Eleka's sponsor, Fayose that was guilty of this.

Theresa May is visiting Nigeria on the second day of her trade mission to boost ties with Africa after Brexit.

Labour's Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott said Mrs May's "warm words" rang hollow as her government had cut Border Force staff and police officers, who were "the frontline in the fight against modern slavery".

Mrs May's three-day trip to Africa is aimed at deepen economic and trade ties with growing African economies ahead of Britain leaving the EU in 2019.

Arriving in South Africa on Tuesday, Mrs May - who is accompanied by a team of business delegates - said she wanted the UK to overtake the US to become the G7's biggest investor in Africa by 2022.

On Thursday, she will finish her tour in Kenya, where she will hold talks with President Uhuru Kenyatta and attend a state dinner, visit a business school and meet British troops.

In a statement issued on Thursday to mark the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, the human rights group accused the government of holding several persons in secret detention facilities without charge or trial across the country.

She added, "It's time the government did the right thing - and either release these detainees or charge them with a recognisable criminal offence in a fair trial without recourse to death penalty."

Using the case of a journalist, Abiri Jones, who was detained for more than two years without trial, the director said, "At the beginning, the government denied detaining him, only to later release him following pressure from civil society organizations."

Ojigho said according to figures provided by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), the fate of at least 600 of their members has been unknown since the Shiites clashed with the military in December 2015 in Zaria.

She alleged that several people suspected of being associated with Boko Haram, Niger Delta agitators, and pro-Biafra activists in the country were arbitrarily arrested and detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) in recent years.

Philip Hackett, a Queen’s Counsel, has expressed the reservations of the United Kingdom, when it comes to returning looted funds to Nigeria.

Speaking on the theme: ‘Institutionalising the War against Corruption – New Approaches to Assets Tracing and Recovery’, at the Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Abuja on Wednesday, Hackett said the issues with accounting for the funds also contributed to the UK’s hesitation on returning looted funds.

He said: “How much money has been recovered? Practically nothing. Nigeria has recovered so little.

“The UK’s position is that Nigeria cannot be trusted with its money. That’s what underpins it (poor asset return rate), and it has to be addressed.”

The session was chaired by Professor Bolaji Owasanoye, Executive Secretary, Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), and featured the presence of Ibrahim Magu, the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), who was represented by Chile Okoroma, EFCC’s Director of Legal and Prosecution Department.

In his address, Magu lamented “poor record keeping system”, noting that it is difficult to estimate how much has been looted from the country.

He said: “It is difficult to estimate what Nigeria has lost because we have poor record keeping system.

“Lawyers have been involved in money laundering; laundering of proceeds of crime. When they were asked to register with the Special Control Unit against Money Laundering (SVUML) for regulation, they went to court. NBA said it could regulate itself. But how far has NBA gone in regulating itself? That is the issue.

“I think the NBA Disciplinary Committee should be up and doing. I get embarrassed when NBA descends heavily on lawyers who are not considered to be significant, but they turn a blind eye to what big-time counsels are doing.

“I think they have to do their work without looking at faces, no matter whose ox is gored. That is the only way that we can have confidence and respect for the disciplinary committee."

The report entitled, “A new taxonomy for corruption in Nigeria,” was quoted to have offered as follows: “Kleptocratic capture of political party structures is a sine qua non of gaining power and thereby unlocking corruption opportunities across a range of other sectors.

Little distinguishes Nigeria’s two main political parties in this regard. Both are constellations of fluid national, state, local elite networks. Both are almost identically structured non-ideological organisations. Both rely on misappropriated public funds to finance elections campaigns. Neither values internal party democracy, allowing money and high-level interference to corrupt candidate selection processes.”

It diagnosed further that: “… Corruption in Nigeria runs the gamut from the jaw-dropping, to the creative, to the mundane. It encompasses the oil minister who diverted billions of petro-dollars in just a few years.

It includes the local official who claimed a snake slithered into her office and gobbled up $100,000 in cash. And it involves the cop shaking down motorists for 25 cents apiece at makeshift checkpoints.”
